Rudolf Koivu – The Enchanting Illustrator exhibition at Valamo
A major exhibition showcasing the illustrative art of Rudolf Koivu (1890–1946) has opened at the Valamo Monastery Cultural Centre. It has been produced in collaboration with the Amer Cultural Foundation and the Tuusula Art Museum. The exhibition has been curated by cultural producer Liisa Heikkilä-Palo and exhibition curator Päivi Ahdeoja-Määttä.

Rudolf Koivu’s magnificent illustrations are showcased in a variety of ways, not only as original works but also as striking enlargements. In this exhibition for the whole family, the focus is not only on the visual aspect but also on bringing the illustrations to life through storytelling. It includes, among other things, excerpts from fairy tales illustrated by Koivu. Visitors also get to know the artist on a deeper level. Personal photographs lift the veil on the artist’s personality.
Despite a difficult childhood, Rudolf Koivu went on to become one of Finland’s most beloved illustrators, whose distinctive style continues to captivate viewers to this day. Koivu’s illustrations transport the viewer to an enchanted world filled with beauty and a mystical atmosphere, yet also featuring some frightening themes.
The exhibition is further complemented by an exhibition at the Valamo Monastery Library, where Rudolf Koivu’s graphic works are displayed in the form of calendar illustrations, postcards and book cover art, amongst other things. A booklet presenting Rudolf Koivu’s life and illustrative work has been published to accompany the exhibition. The book is also on sale at the Tuusula Museum shops in Halosenniemi and Erkkola.
In 2023, Valamo hosted an exhibition of works by the illustrator Martta Wendelin, organised in collaboration with the Tuusula Art Museum. Rudolf Koivu’s exhibition will run until 15 January 2027.
